Tokyo Port to add 450,000 TEUs with new Y3 container yard

Construction will start in fiscal 2026 on a new container yard at Y3 Berth of the Outer Central Breakwater Container Terminal at the Port of Tokyo. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s Bureau of Port and Harbor confirmed the project.

The terminal is scheduled to enter operation in fiscal 2028.

Capacity boost for Tokyo Port

Once operational, Y3 Berth will add 450,000 TEUs of annual capacity. This represents around 10% of Tokyo Port’s total container capacity.

Focus on digitalisation and decarbonisation

The bureau will deploy electric and remote-controlled cargo-handling equipment. The move supports Tokyo Port’s goals for digital transformation and lower emissions.

Key specifications

The new berth will cover 23 hectares and feature:

Quay length: 400 metres

Draft: 16 metres

Equipment:

3 gantry cranes (22-container outreach)

17 rubber-tyred gantry cranes

The facility will strengthen Tokyo’s role as a major container hub in Northeast Asia.
