Associated British Ports, Brett and Tarmac have formed a coordinated logistics partnership to support the construction of Sizewell C.
The partnership plans to provide an integrated tri-modal supply chain for construction materials through the West Bank at ABP’s Port of Ipswich.
The proposed logistics system will combine marine, rail and road transport with materials handling and storage services.
It aims to support Sizewell C’s target of transporting at least 60% of its construction materials by rail or sea.
ABP will provide port operations and marine services, including vessel call management, cargo discharge and storage.
The West Bank site can handle large volumes of aggregates and other construction materials. Its location also provides access to rail, marine and road connections within reach of the Sizewell C development.
“We believe this partnership gives Sizewell C a practical solution with strong marine and rail capacity at its core,” said Paul Ager, Divisional Port Manager at Associated British Ports.
Ager said the Port of Ipswich provides the scale, storage capacity, quayside infrastructure and connectivity needed to support high-volume deliveries while reducing pressure on local roads.
Brett has operated its Ipswich facility since the 1980s and already supplies Sizewell C with Tarmac materials transported to Ipswich by rail.
The company’s West Bank site supports aggregate imports by vessel and has links to the rail network.
“Our site at the West Bank is already a key part of the region’s aggregate supply,” said Oliver Brown, Development Director at Brett.
Brown said the partnership would support reliable deliveries, efficient material movements and lower-impact transportation.
Tarmac will contribute its technical expertise, construction materials and experience with rail operations.
The company has worked on major infrastructure projects across the United Kingdom. Its ISO 19443 certification provides additional quality controls for supplying the nuclear industry.
“Our focus is on ensuring consistency and certainty in supply as the project progresses,” said Will Pearson, Nuclear Commercial Director at Tarmac.
Pearson said combining materials expertise with established rail capacity would support efficient deliveries at scale.
The three companies said the logistics platform could expand as construction requirements increase.
Storage, handling and transport capacity can be adjusted over time to meet changes in the Sizewell C programme.
The partnership is also intended to strengthen supply chain resilience by using existing port facilities, rail connections and regional expertise.
Jack Abbott, MP for Ipswich, said the initiative could support local employment and investment while strengthening the region’s role in national infrastructure projects.
