DP World is celebrating two decades of operations at the Port of Callao in Peru, reflecting a sustained period of investment that has transformed the terminal into one of South America’s leading container gateways and established it as the country’s primary trade hub, handling approximately 60 percent of Peru’s containerised cargo.
Since commencing operations in 2006, DP World has invested approximately US$ 1 billion in port infrastructure, equipment modernisation and advanced technology, handling more than 22 million TEUs in total over the period.
In 2025, the terminal surpassed 2 million TEUs for the first time in a single year, becoming the first terminal on South America’s west coast to reach that milestone and a volume that a decade earlier represented the combined annual throughput of all ports in Peru.
Between January and May 2026, DP World Callao handled 48 percent of Peru’s exports and 61% of its imports, connecting key agricultural export industries including grapes, avocados and pomegranates with markets across Europe, North America and Asia.
A USD 400 million expansion completed in 2024, including the inauguration of the Bicentennial Pier, increased annual capacity to 2.7 million TEUs and enabled the terminal to accommodate larger vessels.
Looking ahead, DP World is advancing plans for a proposed investment of more than US$ 1.3 billion to expand the South Terminal, which would increase annual capacity further to up to 4.3 million TEUs alongside a 20.8-hectare off-dock staging area.
On the sustainability side, recent investments include 36 electric internal transfer vehicles, Latin America’s first dedicated port charging station for electric vehicles and the electrification of nearly the entire yard crane fleet.
DP World’s Callao operations support an estimated US$ 23.6 billion in annual economic activity across Peru and thousands of direct and indirect jobs throughout the country.
Carlos Merino, CEO of DP World in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, described the 20-year journey as a collaborative effort with customers, employees, government partners and the logistics community to strengthen Peru’s connection to global trade and transform Callao into a world-class gateway positioned for long-term economic growth.
