Port of Klaipėda launches tender for €600 million southern expansion

The Port of Klaipėda has launched a construction tender for the major expansion of its southern area.

The project will create 100 hectares of new land in an area currently forming part of the Curonian Lagoon.

It will also include the construction of a 1,300-metre quay and significant supporting infrastructure.

The southern development will significantly increase the existing port area.

New terminals are planned for the 100-hectare site. The project will also expand container handling capacity and create opportunities for marine engineering activities.

Once fully developed, the southern part of Klaipėda is expected to have capacity to handle around 30 million tonnes of cargo annually.

“The development of the southern part of the port will create new opportunities for both the Port of Klaipėda and Lithuania,” said Algis Latakas, Director General of the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority.

“The new area will attract investors and enable the development of new terminals, bringing new jobs, economic growth and an even stronger transport and logistics sector.”

The selected contractor will create the new land and construct the 1,300-metre quay.

The project also includes dredging port waters and carrying out part of the construction work on one of the breakwaters.

Other works will involve installing stormwater drainage systems and building a shoreline protection wall near Kiaulės Nugara Island.

A section of the 110 kV Marios–Juodkrantė overhead power line will also be removed and replaced with a new underground power cable.

Contractors responsible for the breakwaters are already working at the site.

Nearly €600 million has been allocated to the southern expansion under the Port of Klaipėda’s 2026–2029 Strategic Plan.

The project represents the largest part of the port’s investment programme during this period.

Including future private investment, the total value of the development is expected to exceed €1 billion.

The procedure for leasing the new area, or parts of it, through a competitive tender has also been approved.

An international tender to select an operator for the future site is expected to be launched later this year.
