The Port Authority of Vigo has awarded a contract for the demolition of eight former cement silos located within the port’s container terminal.
The project will release approximately 6,000 square metres of strategically located terminal space, supporting the reorganisation of container operations and addressing growing logistics requirements.
According to the port authority, container traffic at Vigo is expected to reach another record high in 2026, with volumes projected to increase by nearly 5%. The port also expects the upward trend to continue.
The project will begin with the complete emptying of the eight silos, followed by their demolition and the preparation of the recovered area for terminal operations. The maximum execution period is eight months, although the port aims to make the space operational by spring 2027.
The latest project follows the removal of eight other silos between 2015 and 2019. Those works reduced the visual impact of the facilities, released additional port space and improved cargo loading and unloading operations.
The demolition forms part of a broader plan to improve the efficiency of the Port of Vigo by reorganising the use of available land across the port complex.
The release of the space will also support a larger project involving the construction of a new Border Control Post. The facility is expected to improve inspection services and facilitate international cargo movements through the port.
