Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone has announced the launch of a dedicated Empty Container Yard with integrated warehousing at Mundra Port, addressing the significant volume of empty container movements that characterise India’s largest container-handling port.
Mundra currently handles approximately 1.6 million TEUs of empty containers annually, reflecting its critical role in supporting India’s import-export supply chains.
Mundra Port handles nearly 35% of India’s total container trade, with APSEZ commanding a 45.5% share of the national container market as of fiscal year 2026.
The ECY initiative forms part of the company’s Ambition 2031 roadmap, under which APSEZ plans to add more than 6 million TEUs of container handling capacity across its network over the next five years.
The dedicated facility will offer end-to-end services across the empty container lifecycle, encompassing storage, maintenance, inspection and seamless movement to exporters and container freight stations.
Operations will be conducted by APSEZ and or partners including CFS operators and shipping lines.
By consolidating empty container operations within the Mundra Port SEZ, the facility will enable closer coordination among Customs authorities, shipping lines, terminal operators and transporters.
Ashwani Gupta, CEO of APSEZ, described the ECY as a means of enhancing efficiency across the container ecosystem through faster turnaround times, reduced unnecessary container movements and optimised logistics costs, framing it as central to APSEZ’s commitment to trade-enabling infrastructure and India’s Viksit Bharat development vision.
