Rotterdam World Gateway secures financing for €500 million expansion

Rotterdam World Gateway (RWG) has secured a new financing package to support the final phase of its €500 million container terminal expansion at Maasvlakte 2 in the Port of Rotterdam.

The financing comprises senior and junior debt tranches, with Société Générale acting as financial advisor and sole private placement agent for the transaction.

According to Clifford Chance, which advised RWG on the deal, the package represents the terminal operator’s largest financing to date and includes a senior US private placement alongside a private credit subordinated tranche.

The funding will support RWG’s ongoing expansion, including the development of its fourth and final deep-sea berth.

RWG currently has an annual handling capacity of approximately 2.6 million TEU.

Once the expansion is completed, the terminal is expected to accommodate up to 5 million TEU, significantly increasing its role within Rotterdam and the wider Northern European container network.

The fourth berth will be designed to handle the world’s largest container ships.

RWG’s €500 million investment also includes five new quay cranes, 11 storage modules equipped with 22 automated stacking cranes and 24 automated guided vehicles (AGVs).

The terminal is also exploring the potential implementation of a BoxBay system with capacity to store approximately 30,000 TEU of empty containers.

Further investments will increase charging capacity for electric equipment and expand gate capacity, maintenance facilities, office space and storage for non-standard cargo.

RWG expects the additional capacity from the final expansion phase to enter commercial operation before 2030.

Société Générale said the expansion is intended to support future growth while helping address sustained congestion pressures at the Port of Rotterdam.

“We’re pleased to announce the acceleration of the ongoing expansion of the capacity of our container terminal on Maasvlakte 2, marking another key milestone in the company’s growth,” said Enrico Douwens, CFO of RWG.

He added that the financing structure delivered by Société Générale meets the requirements of the parties involved in the transaction.

The latest development follows RWG’s announcement in August that it would accelerate the final phase of the Maasvlakte 2 expansion.

The project will take place alongside the terminal’s third-berth expansion, which is expected to enter commercial operation in 2027.

The final phase will utilise the full quay capacity allocated to RWG by the Port of Rotterdam Authority.

RWG is owned by DP World, CMA CGM through Terminal Link, HMM and Ocean Network Express (ONE).
