Construction has started on the completion of the docks at the Port of Taureana di Palmi, a EUR 7.5 million project awarded to SILEM, Società Italiana Lavori Edili Marittimi, with a duration of 20 months.
The works will finish the shoreline docks and enclose the entire perimeter of the port waterway, expanding available space on land and at sea, increasing the number of berths and improving navigation, safety and the quality of services.
Starting the works required a complex administrative and operational process to clear the affected waterways and land areas, involving six concessionaires who had to vacate them.
The Port System Authority will seek alternative solutions and spaces so that nautical activities can continue wherever possible during construction, limiting disruption to operators.
The land areas will be redeveloped and reorganised, with yards paved in porphyry slabs and the services needed to run the new infrastructure.
Garages for nautical activities and facilities for boaters will be built, with space for restaurants, yacht clubs, commercial activities and restrooms.
The aim is for the port to become a welcoming hub linking port, city and sea, supporting tourism and the enhancement of the Costa Viola. The project has been made possible by close cooperation with the Municipality of Palmi.
Environmental and landscape measures are a defining part of the design. Material from excavation and dredging will be reused to nourish a stretch of coastline north of the port, reducing disposal needs while helping protect the shoreline.
New green areas will be created behind the caissons, using native species to form dune systems that serve both environmental and landscape purposes.
President Paolo Piacenza said the start of works confirms the Port System Authority’s commitment to delivering on its promises to redevelop the whole port system, and that the project began within the timeframe the Authority set itself after careful planning and complex preparatory work.
He added that the goal goes beyond completing a port project: it is to build infrastructure that interacts with its surroundings and becomes a hub for recreational boating and a new attraction for the entire Costa Viola.
