Dongwon Global Terminal Busan plans to expand its automated container-handling infrastructure at Busan New Port under an investment agreement signed with regional authorities.
The company signed the Memorandum of Understanding with the Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone Authority, South Gyeongsang Province and Changwon City during an investment event held in Seoul on 20 October 2026.
Under the agreement, Dongwon Global Terminal Busan plans to invest approximately KRW200 billion by 2028 in the West Container Terminal area of Busan New Port.
The investment will cover additional automated guided vehicles, container-handling equipment and advanced terminal operating systems.
Dongwon Global Terminal Busan expects the expansion to strengthen the smart port capabilities of Busan New Port and create 88 new jobs.
The Dongwon Group subsidiary opened South Korea’s first fully automated container terminal at Busan New Port in April 2024.
The terminal uses automated guided vehicles, automated container cranes and an integrated operating system to handle the unloading, transportation and storage of containers.
It has also introduced electrically powered equipment to improve operating efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of its operations.
The agreement also includes a separate investment by medical supplies manufacturer Young Chemical.
Young Chemical plans to invest KRW100 billion by 2029 in a new medical supplies and cosmetics manufacturing facility in the second phase of the Ungdong hinterland area in Jinhae-gu, Changwon.
The facility will occupy approximately 33,000 square metres and is expected to create 60 jobs.
Together, the two companies plan to invest KRW300 billion and create 148 jobs within the Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone.
The Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone Authority said it would work with South Gyeongsang Province and Changwon City to support the necessary administrative and permitting procedures.
