Kijing Terminal expands container handling capacity with two hybrid RTGs

Kijing Terminal has strengthened its container handling capabilities with the addition of two hybrid battery-powered rubber tyred gantry cranes (RTGs), supporting its expansion following the launch of direct container export services.

The two Sany Hybrid Full Battery RTGs arrived aboard the MV BILLIE on 4 July and were unloaded at Kijing Terminal in West Kalimantan. Each unit has a safe working load of 41 tonnes and is currently being assembled before entering service.

The new equipment is expected to improve container loading and unloading efficiency while supporting more sustainable port operations.

Yanto, General Manager of PT Pelindo Regional 2 Pontianak, said the investment marks another step in the terminal’s modernisation programme.

“The addition of these battery-powered hybrid RTGs is part of our commitment to modernising equipment at Kijing Terminal while supporting more efficient and environmentally friendly port operations. With this additional infrastructure, we expect the terminal’s service capacity to increase in line with growing logistics and export-import activity in West Kalimantan,” said Yanto, General Manager of PT Pelindo Regional 2 Pontianak.

Alongside the equipment upgrade, Kijing Terminal is preparing for higher vessel traffic as container volumes continue to grow.

The terminal is scheduled to receive additional services from PT Pulau Laut Line, including BG.MMSS 2711 on the Pasir Gudang–Kijing–ICA–Kijing–Pasir Gudang route and MV.WGM 256T operating between Jakarta and Kijing.

According to Pelindo, the additional vessel calls reflect increasing demand for container services and stronger domestic and international trade connectivity through the terminal.

The company believes the combination of new equipment and more frequent vessel arrivals will improve terminal productivity and reinforce Kijing Terminal’s role as an export gateway for West Kalimantan.

“Following the success of our first direct export shipment, we continue to strengthen supporting facilities at Kijing Terminal. The arrival of these two Hybrid Full Battery RTGs forms part of Pelindo’s investment to increase service capacity, accelerate container handling and deliver more modern, efficient and environmentally friendly port operations. Once assembly is complete, the equipment will be prepared for service. Together with the scheduled arrival of additional vessels from PT Pulau Laut Line, we are optimistic that container activity at Kijing Terminal will continue to grow and support smoother logistics and export-import flows in West Kalimantan,” Yanto added.
