The Port of Klaipėda has begun site preparation for the largest expansion project in its history.
The initial work is taking place in the southern part of the port, where Klaipėda plans to develop a major new port area.
Construction of the southern breakwaters is scheduled to begin in autumn 2026.
Tilsta will construct the new southern breakwaters after winning a tender launched earlier in 2026.
The company has signed a contract worth €24.5 million, excluding VAT, with the Klaipėda Port Authority.
“We are now very close to the start of the southern port expansion,” said Algis Latakas, CEO of the Klaipėda Port Authority.
“After a long period of planning and preparation, work on site is beginning,” he added.
“Once the site is ready, construction of the southern breakwaters will start this autumn, marking the first stage of the largest expansion project in the history of the Port of Klaipėda,” Latakas continued.
The new breakwaters will help limit the flow of salt water into the Curonian Lagoon.
The wider southern expansion will create additional space and significantly increase the port’s capacity for cargo handling and other port operations.
The Port of Klaipėda plans to invest nearly €600 million in the southern expansion between 2026 and 2029.
The project represents the largest part of the port’s investment programme for the four-year period.
Including investment expected from future investors, the development’s total value will exceed €1 billion.
This will make the southern port expansion one of the largest investment projects currently under development in Lithuania.
“This project shows that we are steadily moving forward with our plans to build a stronger port for Lithuania,” said Latakas.
“It will make the country more attractive to investors, strengthen our competitiveness in international markets and support military mobility needs that are important not only for Lithuania, but for the wider region,” he concluded.
