Southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Sea port authority approves 2027 budget

The Management Committee of the Southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Sea Port System Authority has adopted the 2027 Budget forecast and the 2027-2029 Three-Year Public Works Programme, outlining a significant investment programme across the system’s five Calabrian ports.

The 2027 budget shows revenues of approximately EUR 24 million and estimated expenditures of approximately EUR 88 million, with capital expenditures of EUR 70 million in addition to EUR 70 million already included in the current financial year, bringing the combined total to EUR 140 million.

The operating deficit of approximately EUR 64 million is fully covered by an estimated operating surplus exceeding EUR 137 million.

The most significant single investment in the Three-Year Programme is the completion of the cold ironing system at the Port of Gioia Tauro through the implementation of an already contracted Framework Agreement, representing a further EUR 30 million investment.

Also at Gioia Tauro, a tender is expected to be launched for the development of the former Isotta Fraschini area, earmarked for the construction of a new rail-ship-road interchange at a cost of EUR 10 million, strengthening integration between maritime and rail transport and connecting the port to national and European logistics corridors.

Environmental redevelopment of the port’s internal areas and beach, including the former greenhouse area south of the port, is planned to begin in 2027 at a total investment of EUR 5 million.

Across the ports of Crotone, Corigliano Calabro and Vibo Valentia, energy efficiency projects totalling EUR 2.5 million will improve infrastructure efficiency, install renewable energy generation capacity and create the conditions for the development of Renewable Energy Communities, implementing the guidelines of the Port System Energy and Environmental Planning Document.

President Paolo Piacenza described the programme as outlining a concrete development perspective for the entire port system, with Gioia Tauro serving as the main logistics and intermodal engine while Crotone, Corigliano Calabro, Vibo Valentia Marina and Taureana di Palmi perform complementary and strategic functions.

He characterised the planned investments as a clear strategic choice to improve infrastructure quality, strengthen intermodality, support the energy transition and attract new traffic and economic activity to Calabria.
