Valenciaport rail traffic grows despite lower July volumes

Valenciaport rail traffic continued to grow during the first seven months of 2026, despite a year-on-year decline in overall container throughput in July.

The Spanish port handled 459,517 TEUs in July, down 9.84% from 509,685 TEUs in the same month of 2025.

Between January and July, Valenciaport handled 3,279,119 containers, representing a decline of 1.34%. However, throughput over the latest 12-month period remained above 5.6 million containers.

The port handled 5,618,144 containers during that period, up 0.16%.

Imports increased by 10.33% during the first seven months of the year. Meanwhile, exports declined by 1.34%.

China remained Valenciaport’s largest international market by container volume and cargo weight.

The port handled 546,966 TEUs linked to China between January and July. This represented an increase of 18.39% compared with the same period in 2025.

Trade with China reached 5,941,770 tonnes, up 19.49%.

The United States ranked second by container volume with 193,179 TEUs, down 16.22%. Algeria followed with 177,776 TEUs, a decline of 5.27%.

Türkiye recorded 112,110 TEUs, down 23.98%, while Italy reached 61,149 TEUs, a decrease of 19.73%.

Several other markets recorded growth. Brazil increased by 16.49% to 83,124 TEUs, while Morocco rose by 9.18% to 76,118 TEUs. Egypt increased by 11.15% to 73,226 TEUs.

Italy remained Valenciaport’s second-largest international market by cargo weight. Trade reached 3.66 million tonnes, down 13.20%.

The United States recorded 3.35 million tonnes, a decline of 7.09%. Algeria handled 2.43 million tonnes, down 15.77%, while Türkiye approached two million tonnes after falling by 24.94%.

By contrast, cargo trade with Morocco increased by 14.17%. Egypt also recorded growth of 12.67%.

Valenciaport handled 48,405 vehicles in July, up 19.09% year on year.

During the first seven months of 2026, its terminals loaded or unloaded 325,335 vehicles. This represented an increase of 10.68%.

Vehicle traffic over the latest 12-month period reached 555,878 units, up 6.21%.

Valenciaport rail traffic also recorded strong growth. Rail transported 2,303,316 tonnes between January and July, an increase of 19.31%.

Container traffic by rail reached 172,328 TEUs by 31 July, up 17.97% compared with the same period last year.
