Port of San Diego welcomes ocean ecostructures

The Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners has approved a new Blue Economy Incubator pilot project with Ocean Ecostructures, a startup that has developed biodiversity regeneration technology designed to enhance marine life on human-made ocean structures.

The agreement marks the 15th pilot project launched by the BEI since its establishment in 2016 as a launching pad for sustainable, ocean-based technology ventures.

The two-year pilot project will be deployed across multiple locations throughout San Diego Bay and monitored for effectiveness, with the aim of enhancing biodiversity at port infrastructure without disrupting daily operations.

The agreement is capped at US$ 208,000 in exchange for royalties on future gross revenues of up to US$ 1.25 million.

Ocean Ecostructures has previously deployed its technology across Europe and the Middle East, and the San Diego collaboration marks an important milestone in the company’s expansion into the US market.

CEO and Co-Founder Ignasi Ferrer described the partnership as an opportunity to demonstrate how marine infrastructure can actively contribute to restoring ocean biodiversity while generating measurable environmental and socioeconomic impact translatable into corporate value, providing a foundation for scaling the solution across US ports and beyond.

Chair Ann Moore of the Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners highlighted the BEI programme as a demonstration of the port’s commitment to innovation, sustainability and its role as environmental champion of San Diego Bay.
