Arken Intermodal Terminal achieves near-doubled yard capacity

The Port of Gothenburg has significantly increased yard capacity at Arken Intermodal Terminal through a reconfiguration of the railway track layout, freeing up approximately 4,000 square metres of additional yard space for trailers and other units.

The result is an increase of almost double the previous yard capacity from a five percent expansion in available space.

Arken Intermodal Terminal is one of Sweden’s largest intermodal terminals and a key hub for transfers between rail, road and sea. Growing cargo volumes over time had pushed capacity in certain flows close to its limit, with yard space identified as the primary constraint.

The capacity improvement was achieved by rebuilding one of the through tracks at the terminal to release the additional yard area, demonstrating that smarter use of existing infrastructure can deliver substantial gains without the need for large-scale construction.

Carl Johan Andersson, Senior Logistics Developer at the Port of Gothenburg, described the result as an example of capacity development through intelligent use of existing land rather than simply building bigger, noting that a five percent increase in space has delivered close to a doubling of yard capacity.

Emma Meltin, Bridge Manager Intermodal at Gothenburg RoRo Terminal, highlighted the operational benefits of greater yard flexibility, enabling better flow planning, more effective peak management and reduced unnecessary cargo movements, ultimately delivering more efficient and reliable service to customers.
