Hutchison Ports Pakistan–SAPTL has outlined a US$76 million investment programme to modernise and expand its container terminal operations at Karachi Port.
The programme will introduce new electric and remote-controlled cargo-handling equipment in phases through May 2028, according to Karachi Port Trust (KPT).
The investment forms part of a broader modernisation drive at Karachi Port, which includes digitalisation, modern equipment, deeper and more efficient navigation, selective use of artificial intelligence and workforce development.
The investment programme is already underway, with the first new equipment scheduled to arrive this month.
SAPTL expects to receive 10 electric trailers in August 2026, followed by 20 electric trucks in October.
Further equipment will be introduced during 2027 and 2028 as the terminal moves towards more automated and electric cargo-handling operations.
According to KPT, the programme is designed to support the transition towards more environmentally sustainable terminal operations.

A major phase of the programme is scheduled for July 2027.
SAPTL is expected to receive two remote-controlled quay cranes and six remote-controlled rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGCs).
In addition, 50 electric trucks and 40 electric trailers are planned by mid-2027.
A further 11 remote-controlled RTGCs are scheduled for deployment in May 2028.
KPT did not specify in its announcement whether the 50 electric trucks and 40 electric trailers planned by mid-2027 include or are additional to the equipment scheduled to arrive in 2026.
C.S. Kim, CEO of SAPTL–Hutchison Ports, presented the implementation roadmap during discussions with KPT Chairman Rear Admiral Shahid Ahmed.
The US$76 million programme is part of KPT’s wider effort to develop what it describes as a smarter and more future-ready port ecosystem.
Alongside equipment upgrades, KPT highlighted digitalised operations, selective AI integration and human-capital development as areas of focus.
The port authority said the broader transformation aims to improve efficiency, sustainability and operational performance while strengthening Karachi Port’s position as a competitive trade gateway.
