Port of Gothenburg reports stable freight flows

Cargo volumes at the Port of Gothenburg developed steadily from January to September 2026.

Container volumes were in line with the previous year, while several segments grew clearly: new cars rose 14% and energy products 10%, and Ro/Ro traffic and rail volumes also continued to increase.

The port handled 698,000 TEU in the period, against 699,000 TEU a year earlier.

Behind the largely unchanged total lies a 2% rise in laden containers and an 11% fall in empty container handling, meaning more cargo and less air than before. Imports of laden containers increased 7%, while exports decreased 1%.

Around 60 percent of containers are moved by rail to or from the hinterland. Rail volumes reached 403,000 TEU, up 2 percent on the same period last year, which puts rail traffic on course for another record year.

Claes Sundmark, Vice President Sales & Marketing at the Port of Gothenburg, said development is stable across all cargo segments in a market that remains hard to assess, and that growing volumes in every segment show the port remains a strong and reliable freight hub for Swedish foreign trade.

He described the port’s rail system, Railport Scandinavia, as crucial to its offering, strengthening the competitiveness of Swedish industry by connecting import and export regions across the country with the port’s maritime services in an efficient and sustainable way.
