Port of Klaipėda deploys smart buoy to improve navigation safety

The Port of Klaipėda has deployed a new smart buoy in the Baltic Sea to improve navigation safety and vessel traffic management.

The buoy is located four nautical miles from the port entrance. It collects real-time navigation and weather data.

The system measures wave height, direction and period. It also monitors currents, water and air temperature, atmospheric pressure and GPS signal interference.

The information is transmitted to the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority’s data centre.

The buoy can also support vessels when GPS signals are disrupted.

In these situations, it can provide a reliable reference point as vessels approach the area where port pilots board.

Pilots then use specialised equipment designed to operate during signal interference to guide vessels safely into the port.

The next stage will use the collected information to improve weather and sea-condition forecasts.

MOVEO project partner MC Baltics will develop a forecasting algorithm based on a machine learning model.

The system will combine real-time measurements with historical data. The Port Authority expects this to provide more accurate forecasts for the port and its approaches.

The information could also help the port adjust logistics plans and manage vessel, cargo and transport flows more efficiently.

The Port of Klaipėda is one of five demonstration sites participating in the MOVEO project.

A total of 18 innovations will be developed and tested across Lithuania, Switzerland, Italy and France.

MOVEO has a total budget of €5.74 million under the Horizon Europe programme.

The Port of Klaipėda has been allocated €395,600, with 70% of the costs covered by project funding.
