The Port of Lázaro Cárdenas handled 21,517,529 tonnes of commercial cargo from January to September 2026, representing 21% of national goods movement and confirming its position as Mexico’s second most important port.
A total of 1,339 vessel calls were recorded during the period.
Containerised cargo dominated operations at 52% of total commercial cargo movement, followed by mineral bulk at 36 percent, with the remaining 12% comprising vehicles, general cargo, other fluids and agricultural bulk.
Container throughput reached 2,007,493 TEUs, a 3% increase compared to the same period in 2025.
Transshipment accounted for 48% of container operations, with imports and exports each contributing 26%, reflecting the port’s dual role as a Pacific cargo redistribution hub and gateway for domestic industry.
On the landside, 71% of containers were transported by truck and 29% by rail.
In the automotive sector, the port handled 531,182 vehicles between January and September, establishing it as the leading automotive port on Mexico’s Pacific coast.
Imports accounted for 74% of automotive traffic, primarily from China, Japan and South Korea, while exports represented 25% and transshipment 1 percent. Principal brands handled included General Motors, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda and BMW.
The nine-month results illustrate the convergence of multiple productive and commercial sectors at Lázaro Cárdenas, a strategic infrastructure node connecting national supply chains with international markets across both container and automotive cargo segments.
