RSGT Bangladesh has recorded a new productivity benchmark at the Patenga Container Terminal in Chattogram.
The terminal handled up to 58 container moves, or 82 TEUs, per hour while serving CMA CGM vessel MV Wanen.
The operation involved 900 container moves, representing 1,350 TEUs, according to RSGT Bangladesh.
The operation marked the terminal’s first handling of a gearless vessel using its newly commissioned ship-to-shore (STS) cranes.
Unlike geared vessels, gearless ships rely on shore-based cranes for loading and unloading containers.
RSGT Bangladesh said the new equipment supported the higher handling rate. Improved operating practices, international expertise and the terminal’s local workforce also contributed to the performance.
The operator said the historical productivity level in Bangladesh has been around 30 moves, or 48 TEUs, per hour. Therefore, the latest performance was significantly higher than the previous benchmark.
“Reaching 58 moves / 82 TEUs per hour is more than a productivity achievement – it demonstrates the potential of modern port operations in Bangladesh,” said Erwin Haaze, CEO of RSGT Bangladesh.
Haaze said the milestone reflected the combination of technology, international expertise, disciplined operations and a skilled workforce.
The milestone comes less than two months after RSGT officially inaugurated the Patenga Container Terminal.
The terminal was developed with an investment of approximately US$170 million.
Container News reported in July that the investment was aimed at strengthening Bangladesh’s container handling capacity and improving the country’s trade connectivity.
The terminal is operated by Saudi-based Red Sea Gateway Terminal under a 22-year concession.
Its equipment programme includes four STS cranes. The equipment allows the facility to handle gearless container vessels without relying on ships’ own cranes.
The latest result provides an early indication of the impact of the new equipment. Meanwhile, RSGT continues to ramp up operations at the terminal.
