The US Coast Guard has imposed vessel restrictions at the ports of Saipan and Tinian ahead of Tropical Storm Saudel.
Port Heavy Weather Condition Yankee took effect at 8:00 p.m. CHST on 20 August 2026. It replaced Condition X-Ray, which the Coast Guard introduced earlier that day.
Under Condition Yankee, sustained gale-force winds of 39 to 54 mph, or 34 to 47 knots, are expected within 24 hours.
The Port of Rota remains under Port Condition Whiskey.
The US Coast Guard has ordered all commercial vessels of at least 200 gross tons to leave Saipan and Tinian.
Vessels may remain only with written approval from the Captain of the Port. Authorities have also suspended all inbound vessel traffic.
Dead ships, barges and other vessels unable to sail must obtain written authorisation to remain in port.
The US Coast Guard initially set Condition X-Ray for Saipan and Tinian at 12:00 p.m. on 20 August.
At that stage, gale-force winds were expected within 48 hours. Shoreside facilities, terminals and commercial vessels were told to prepare to complete cargo operations.
The Coast Guard later raised the condition to Yankee as Tropical Storm Saudel approached.
The US Coast Guard has advised the public to stay off the water. Search and rescue capabilities may become limited as weather conditions worsen.
Boat owners should secure their vessels, safety equipment and other belongings. Trailerable boats should be removed from the water and stored away from flood-prone areas.
The public should also avoid beaches because of stronger waves and rip currents. Mariners should continue monitoring weather reports, Coast Guard broadcasts and marine safety updates.
