La Spezia Container Terminal (LSCT) has placed a €90 million (US$105 million) order for new container handling equipment.
The order includes four ship-to-shore (STS) cranes and 18 pieces of yard equipment.
LSCT is part of Contship Italia, which belongs to the Eurogate group.
The four new STS cranes will be able to serve containerships with capacities of up to 24,000 TEU.
The yard equipment will include rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) and double-cantilever rail-mounted gantry cranes (RMGs).
According to the report, an unnamed Chinese manufacturer will supply the equipment.
Deliveries are expected during the second half of 2028.
The investment forms part of LSCT’s planned Ravano Terminal expansion at the Port of La Spezia.
The project will add a 524-metre berth and around 600,000 TEU of capacity.
Construction of the expansion has not yet started.
LSCT currently has annual handling capacity of approximately 1.4 million TEU.
Elsewhere in La Spezia, Tarros has awarded the first of seven construction contracts for the expansion of its Terminal del Golfo.
The contract went to a consortium comprising Carlo Agnese SpA, Societa Edilizia Tirrena SpA and Ferraloro Srl.
Work on this phase is expected to take just over one year.
The wider expansion will add eight hectares, taking the terminal’s total area to 12 hectares.
The quay will also increase from 470 metres to 770 metres, while annual capacity is expected to triple to around 600,000 TEU.
